A smooth flawless skin is very important for most people and therefore when dark spots start developing especially on one's face it could be quite distressing. Normally irregular melanin secretion causes these patches and there are various causes for this. In many cases using good quality creams for hyperpigmentation could be sufficient in combating these unsightly marks.

Dark pigment patches usually occur during pregnancy due to increased hormones, as liver spots in the elderly and where skin has been over exposed to harmful UV rays. Certain medications and food types can also add to these increased melanin activities in the skin. For very severe cases of pigmentation, lotions often may not be adequate to completely eradicate these marks. Therefore, it is advisable that one consult a dermatologist prior to using any type of topical treatment.

If one consults a dermatologist there are several factors that they will consider in order to successfully treat the client. Some of these lotions are obtainable by prescription only while others can be purchased over the counter. There are also numerous products that are salon exclusive and all of these have their own individual ingredients, which are designed to work in reducing the melanin production of the skin.

With prescription ointments, it is vital that one be informed of any possible side effects especially where they contain cortisone. Cortisone based products are quite dangerous if not controlled by a medical practitioner as they thin out one's skin. So, any of these cortisone products need to be used in conjunction with a high sunscreen in order to protect the skin from any further UV exposure during this stage.

A typically prescribed lotion that at times can be purchased over the counter in lower strengths is hydroquinone. But it could result in black spots on darker skins which is a visible side effect of this ointment. On occasion it is combined with Kojic Acid which is another commonly found ingredient, although these two chemicals are the most desired for a cream of this kind, there are also a few other natural remedies.

Alpha hydroxy acids are naturally found in certain citric fruits and it is more commonly used in beauty treatments to lighten skin discolorations. The dilemma though is that they are not always suited for people with a sensitive skin types. Once again these ointments need to be used in conjunction with a high level SPF.

Thankfully though, even the worst cases of pigmentation can be cured. If the dark discolorations are due to a hormone imbalance, or diet then this is treated together with an ointment. In most instances treatments are successful when the correct combination is utilized, pigmentation that forms during pregnancy normally lightens by itself.

Everyone desires to once again have a smooth, even toned complexion. Creams for hyperpigmentation can restore one's complexion without the need to undergo any harsh abrasive methods. Research has shown that using a gentler approach may indeed take longer, but is a much safer method than using sever measures such as chemical peels.
